The AOSR Gold Medal is the most prestigious and highest honor to be awarded by the AOSR to a person from Asia Oceania who has rendered outstanding and exceptional service or benefactions to the development, teaching, or practice of radiology. In particular, prolonged and exceptional service to the AOSR in a more or less continuous nature, including holding one or more of the high offices of the AOSR.
Congratulations to AsiaSafe Chair, Emeritus Prof Ng who was awarded the AOSR’s Gold Medal on the 22nd August, 2026 during the Congress Gala Dinner at the Asian Oceanian Congress of Radiology, Singapore.
On his home front, the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) honoured Emeritus Prof Ng with the MMA Gold Medal in conjunction with the National Convention and Scientific Congress & 66th MMA Annual General Meeting, on 12th September, 2026.
Biodata of Emeritus Professor Kwan-Hoong Ng, PhD, FIPM, ABMP (USA), AM (Mal), FASc, FIOMP, FIUPESM, FTWAS
Emeritus Professor Kwan-Hoong Ng, PhD, is a distinguished Medical Physicist at the Department of Biomedical Imaging, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya, Malaysia, actively engaged in teaching, research, and mentorship. He has made significant contributions nationally, regionally, and internationally. Professor Ng established the first Master’s program in Medical Physics at Universiti Malaya, accredited by the UK’s Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM) since 2002, making it a leading postgraduate center in the region. He has mentored numerous medical physicists and radiologists, served as visiting professor in several AOSR member societies, and advanced medical writing standards by organizing regional workshops.
Professor Ng formally proposed “AsiaSafe” to AOSR in 2017 and was instrumental in its establishment, promoting a culture of safety in medical radiation use. Further information is available here.
He represents AOSR in organizations such as ISRQSA, ICRP, and IAEA, and continues to mentor the AsiaSafe committee. He led the “MRI Safety in Asia Oceania: Call for Action” publication; managed related outreach materials, and supervised AOSR’s MRI Safety webinars since December 2021. He co-authored the editorial “It is Time to Incorporate Artificial Intelligence in Radiology Residency Programs” and contributed to the AOSR position statement on artificial intelligence in radiology.
Professor Ng pioneered AI applications in medicine, culminating in a 1994 publication on expert systems in foetal distress management. He is extensively published and serves on the editorial boards of over 12 journals. He also contributed to the ICRP TG108 report, Part 2 (ICRP Publication 160, 2026).
He serves as an International Atomic Energy Agency expert and consultant, is the Founding President and current Emeritus President of the South East Asian Federation of Medical Physics and is the founder and current dean of the ASEAN College of Medical Physics. He is also Past President of the Asia-Oceania Federation of Organizations for Medical Physics.
In 2013, Professor Ng was recognized by IOMP as one of 50 medical physicists who made outstanding contributions to the field over the past 50 years. In 2018, he received the IOMP Marie Sklodowska Curie Award for his contributions to breast cancer imaging, radiation medicine, and education. He received the Malaysian Merdeka Award for Outstanding Scholastic Achievement in 2020, recognizing his pioneering work in advancing medical physics and radiation medicine in Malaysia.
Beyond his professional commitments, Professor Ng enjoys classical music, engages in charitable and humanitarian activities, and continues to supervise doctoral fellows and publish scholarly works.
